Ingredients and Labels explained!

Posted on

When you look at the ingredients on your bottle of your Balbo oil or balm, you may be put off by some of the long scary looking names listed! I’ll try and explain, I’ll start off with why some of the ingredient names are written in their scientific name (or INCI format)

“The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, abbreviated INCI, is a system of names for waxes, oils, pigments, chemicals, and other ingredients of soaps, cosmetics, and the like, based on scientific names and other Latin and English words.” (Wikipedia)

In Balbo’s case, I write the ingredients in English, so you know what you are using, then add the INCI name in brackets afterwards. For example: Beeswax (Cera alba). Some companies only write their ingredients in the INCI format without the English, which is fine.

Next, I’ll explain the scientific names at the end of a Balbo ingredients list. These are the naturally occurring allergens. An allergen is commonly defined as “any substance, that induces an allergy”.

It is a requirement of the Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 Directive 7th Amendment that potential allergens should be declared and listed on the label of all cosmetic products

The EU Cosmetics Regulation committee’s response was to recommend that the EU prohibit some Essential Oils and restrict others. (This is why it’s so important to use a product which has been tested and assessed to comply with EU cosmetic legislations, to ensure that these essential/fragrance oils are safe to be used.)  It came out with a list of 26 ingredients mostly found in fragrances and essential oils that, if present at certain levels or higher, must be listed as part of the product’s ingredient listing.

The current list of allergens required to be included if present is as follows:-
AMYL CINNAMAL
BENZYL ALCOHOL
CINNAMYL ALCOHOL
CITRAL
EUGENOL
HYDROXYCITRONELLAL
ISO EUGENOL
